Even simple actions can be a chore sometimes. If you don't want to spend more than a few seconds searching for a file or looking something up on Google, then you might want to have a look at Alfred. Just like a real-life butler, this application will do anything you tell it to. It can locate and open files on your hard drive, access specific locations, deep in your folders structure, open websites and perform many other tasks. All you have to do is tell it what task to execute and the application will take care of the rest.

Alfred's functionality revolves around a main input field, in which you have to type in your commands. You only need to make simple specifications, like an application's name or an action, followed by a parameter. As you type, the application will display various suggestions beneath the input field. As a result, you can simply type in part of an application's or file's name and Alfred will know what you are looking for.

If you don't want to take your hands off the keyboard and click one of the suggestions, you can either use the cursor keys on your keyboard and hit the Return key or use a suggestion's corresponding hotkey, which you will find in the same list. As previously suggested, you can type and execute a wide range of commands, like opening files and folders, accessing websites, various system locations and menus, execute actions, like emptying the trash, shutting down the computer and much more.

The application comes with a rich configurations menu, which you can bring up at any time, with a single click. It contains numerous customization options, for mostly anything you need. You can tweak Alfred local and web searching capabilities, integrate it with various system features, apply different skins and more. An interesting feature, which will be released in a future version is the possibility of controlling Alfred on your Mac with an iOS device.

Pros

Alfred is capable of executing various actions, from opening a file to performing a web search. All operations can be executed with a simple keystroke. The application is free, easy to use and you can install it in no time.

Cons

Certain features are reserved for the application's paid version. With Alfred's aid, you will be able to do almost anything on your Mac, with nothing more than a simple keystroke.
